The Inner Scale Length of Spiral Galaxy Rotation Curves
We use the tapering effect of Hα/[N II] rotation curves of spiral galaxies first noted by Goad & Roberts (1981) to investigate the internal extinction in disks. The scale length of exponential fits to the inner part of rotation curves depends strongly on the disk axial ratio. Preliminary modelling of the effect implies substantial opacity of the central parts of disks at a wavelength of 0.66 μ....
متن کاملSpiral galaxy rotation curves determined from Carmelian general relativity
Equations of motion, in cylindrical co-ordinates, for the observed rotation of gases within the gravitational potential of spiral galaxies have been derived from Carmeli’s Cosmological General Relativity theory. A Tully-Fisher type relation results and rotation curves are reproduced without the need for non-baryonic halo dark matter. Two acceleration regimes are discovered that are separated by...
متن کاملRotation Curves of Spiral Galaxies
Rotation curves of spiral galaxies are the major tool for determining the distribution of mass in spiral galaxies. They provide fundamental information for understanding the dynamics, evolution and formation of spiral galaxies. We describe various methods to derive rotation curves, and review the results obtained. We discuss the basic characteristics of observed rotation curves in relation to v...
متن کامل0 Signatures of Interstellar - Intracluster Medium Interactions : Spiral Galaxy Rotation Curves in Abell 2029
We investigate the rich cluster Abell 2029 (z ∼ 0.08) using optical imaging and long-slit spectral observations of 52 disk galaxies distributed throughout the cluster field. No strong emission-line galaxies are present within ∼ 400 kpc of the cluster center, a region largely dominated by the similarly-shaped X-ray and low surface brightness optical envelopes centered on the giant cD galaxy. How...
متن کاملFitting Galaxy Rotation Curves Without Dark Matter
The notion is presented that fitting galaxy rotation curves is possible without the invocation of dark matter. Equations of motion similar to those used to describe the internal motions of terrestrial weather systems are applied to the rotation curves of galaxies. However, due to the four-dimensional nature of the equations, additional terms arise. One of these additional terms is particularly ...
